How to File for Adoption in Indiana
Adoptions can be filed either through the juvenile court or the circuit court. When the adoption will be finalized in the juvenile court, the judge will usually make a decision within a few days, and the adoption will be finalized within a few months. If the adoption is filed in the circuit court, the process will take longer. However, the court will be more flexible with the requirements and may allow the adoption to be finalized within a year or two if all the requirements are met.
Who Can Adopt in Indiana
In Indiana, both individuals and married couples can file for adoption. However, only married couples can adopt children without special needs. Individuals and couples must be at least 21 years of age to adopt. They must also be financially capable of supporting a child, and be mentally and physically healthy.
When it comes to the relationship between the adopter and the adopter's family, the court will not take the relationship into consideration unless the adopter's parents have a history of abuse or neglect. In such a case, the court will usually favor the child's best interest and allow the adoption to go through. Finally, the court will not take the adopter's sexual orientation into consideration either.
Types of Adoption in Indiana
There are a few different types of adoption in Indiana:

Adoption Records in Indiana
In Indiana, adoption records are sealed and confidential, and only the adoptee and the adopter have access to them. However, the adoptee may request for the records to be unsealed once they turn 18 years of age. The adoptee can request for the records to be unsealed if they can prove that they are:
- At least 18 years of age
- Ailing or dying
- A victim of child abuse or neglect
- A veteran
The adoptee may also request for their adoption records to be unsealed if they are being denied access to their medical history or their Social Security benefits due to the sealed records.
